Specific trees
Some garden trees have a columnar crown. You get best effect with columnar tree if the tree has branches down to ground level. Some of these trees can reach a substantial height in due course, depending on the species. That is why it is important to get expert advice when choosing a tree – so ask at your local garden centre or nursery.
Suitable trees:
- Carpinus betulus ‘Columnaris’ and ‘Frans Fontaine’
- Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck’, ‘Dawyck Gold’ and ‘Dawyck Purple’
- Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Paarl’ and ’Worplesdon’, (sweet gum) the ‘Worplesdon’ has the best autumn colouring.
- Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Fastigiatum’, golden yellow autumn foliage
- Malus ‘Van Eseltine’ (ornamental apple), rich flowering.
- Prunus serrulata ‘Amanogawa’, (Japanese ornamental cherry), yellow-orange autumn foliage
- Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata Koster’.
