Weeping shapes
A magnificent look
Trees with a drooping, so-called weeping crown. This form looks magnificent in a border, but also looks good as a solitary specimen in the garden. If the crown is a variety which is grafted onto a different rootstock, the height of the tree will be determined by the height of the graft.
Suitable species for the garden include:
- Betula pendula ‘Tristis’ and ‘Youngii’, forms a broader crown
- Fagus sylvatica ‘Purple Fountain’ and ‘Purpurea Pendula’, Purple Fountain has a narrower weeping shape.
- Fraxinus excelsior ‘Pendula’ tall tree
- Ginkgo biloba ‘Pendula’ weeping form of the familiar maidenhair tree, attractive golden yellow autumn foliage
- Laburnum alpinum ‘Pendulum’, narrower weeping form of the laburnum, all parts of the tree are poisonous.
- Malus alba ‘Pendula’, (ornamental apple)
- Morus alba ‘Pendula’ (mulberry)
- Prunus serrulata ‘Kiku-shidare’ (ornamental cherry, pink-flowering), weeping form with overhanging branches in large elegant curves.
- Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’(ornamental cherry, white-flowering) broad, slow-growing weeping form
- Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’ (pussy willow) and ‘Curly Locks’ (with twisting twigs), even suitable for use in a pot on the patio or balcony.
